Description

The Busker Series, Book 3 : No Easy Eden

On his way to Italy, Alex Fraser, the busker, is hitchhiking through Germany. Abigail Eve, a black US Air Force captain, gives him a lift. When they stop to eat in the Swabian town of Rothenburg, a desperate group of junkies enters the restaurant they choose. After creating a scene, they run off, followed by a concerned nun who thinks one of them is near death. As Alex and Captain Eve leave, a bomb explodes, killing her and hospitalising Alex. He wakes to find a reporter, Gunther Klein, at his bedside.

After he’s discharged, Alex gets work in a warehouse while Klein investigates. Why is there no trace of the nun? What were junkies doing in a  restaurant? Worried for Alex’s safety, Klein sends him to his alcoholic ex-wife Sigi’s rich family. Sigi and Alex become close, but when he discovers she’s part of what happened to him—and that the US military want to arrest him—he flees. In Rothenburg station, trying to make the price of a ticket to anywhere with his fiddle, he meets an elderly negro. It’s Abigail’s father, jazz trumpeter Luther Eve, come to see where his daughter died.

With Luther’s help, Alex escapes to the old East Germany, where he uncovers a plot which brings together ex-members of the STASI, a cynical American soldier and an implacable ex-terrorist who has assumed a startling new identity.

Drugs, misplaced idealism and bitter family betrayals come to a head in Hamburg’s red light district, where Alex must make the hardest choice of his life.
